EUROPE - U-Multirank, the web site that helps students choose the university that best suit them

Also Europe has a tool for evaluation of the universities. After an initial phase of experimentation, last Tuesday, the European Commission officially launched U-Multirank website that collects 'report cards' of the universities and allows students to perform a custom search of the most suitable to their own objectives, according to the subject and the type of preparation that they propose to obtain. The portal has been funded with two million euro recieved from Brussels and it is based on the assumption that it is not possible to draw a real ranking of the top ten, fifty or a hundred universities in the world, because each of them has its own value.

U-Multirank was developed by a consortium led by Professor Frans van Vught of the Center for Higher Education Policy Studies (Cheps) in the Netherlands and Professor Frank Ziegele of the Centre for Higher Education (CHE) in Germany. Other partners such as the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University, the Catholic University of Leuven, Elsevier academic publishers, the Bertelsmann Foundation and the software company Follow 3 have collaborated with the project. For 2014 the site shows the evaluation of more than 850 high schools, 1,200 university faculties and 5,000 study programs from 70 countries around the world.

The portal provides both an assessment on the general level of each institution and judgments about the performance of each university at specific levels of study fields. Regarding the latter, this year only Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics and Business Studies will be considered, but after 2014 the coverage of institutions and fields will expand: for the 2015 edition, in fact, the goal is to add from 150 to 250 new universities and three new disciplines (Psychology, Computer Science, Medicine). The approach used by U-Multirank is multidimensional and allows to provide useful information not only for the most suitable choice of the university by students, but also by university administrators, politicians, academics and entrepreneurs.

U-Multirank analyzes the performance of universities according to many indicators, so as to highlight the strengths of each university. The criteria taken into consideration include teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, international orientation and regional engagement. The data entered into the portal, through which you can make your own custom search, are taken from various sources such as institutions, international patents, bibliometric data and surveys of more than 60,000 students ...
