Italy - November 29th is the First National Bike to School Day in Five Cities

It is an initiative that has involved dozens of children who were the rulers of the road for a day, going to school by bike. According to the creators of the project, the initiative aims at protecting the right of children in large and chaotic cities that limit the possibility of having a healthy life close to nature. The idea was that today the children were accompanied to school by their parents, all by bike, and also flanked by bicycle activists to ensure their safety in traffic.

The initiative had done previous experiments in several Italian cities, first of all Rome, where, on September 20th last year, an experiment in commuting to and from school by bike was organized by the Roman group "Salvaiciclisti". The 'Esquilino Di Donato' school set in motion the project and then other schools in the capital joined in.

Only the power of social media enabled the promotion of the idea nationwide, starting from individual initiative, and especially thanks to enthusiastic groups of fans of two wheels which have raised public awareness, as well as various institutions.

So if you left for work this morning and found the streets invaded by a "herd" of chattering schoolboys and schoolgirls on bicycle, now you know why! Who knows, maybe even we adults could take a ride once in a while, maybe even to work!
