Morocco - "solar" mosques

The Minister for Islamic Affairs Ahmed Taoufiq of Morocco has announced the signature of an agreement with the ministry of Environment and Energy to convert solar energy of about 15,000 mosques in the country. Morocco is one of the best performing countries in Africa in the field of renewable energy.

The subscription of this agreement is part of a national plan that aims to reduce by 30% the consumption of the electricity in public buildings and to encourage the use of renewable energy sources. The installation of the solar panels will begin immediately in thousand mosques, the others will be involved afterwards.

The enthusiasm for the imminent start of the task can also be explained in the light of a worrying economic crisis, which disturbs social peace with repeated demonstrations.
