Microsoft - Translating Sign Language

The prototype, called Kinect (Kinect Sign Language Translator) captures gestures and the software recognizes them, simultaneously translating the spoken language, and vice versa, allowing anyone to converse with a person who is deaf-mute. Wu Guobin, the program manager of the Sign Language Translator project explains that there will still be a lot of work to do, but the tests are very promising and the software responds beautifully, foretelling an interesting future for Kinect.
This is an example of how technology is not only useful for making video games, but as a contribution to the betterment of the world.
